in protein synthesis, how do ribosomes and mRNA bind?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The mRNA contains a ribosome binding site that varies depending on the type of organism.

This site bonds through base pairing (hydrogen bonds) to the ribosome.

So is it the rRNA in ribosome that bonds by complementary base pairing to mRNA?

Yah it's a specific sequence.

Look up the Shine-Dalgarno sequence, that's the only one I know - and it is in prokaryote.
