Hi, I just joined pediatric residency and soon I have the inservice exam. Can anyone tell me how to prepare and what to expect. How important is this exam?
Thanks.

I'm a new intern too. They told us by no means should we study. Our subsequent in-service exams (during 2nd and 3rd year) are supposed to compare favorably to the ones we take as newbies, thereby showing that doing a residency has taught us something. Ace-ing the test now defeats the purpose. And there is no such thing as failing. This is what they tell me.

I just wanted to second that. I was told not to study either and that they just want to see improvement each year. Good luck everyone. My inservice exam is tomorrow afternoon.

I was told the same thing- don't do great because you'll be expected to improve each year. Well, I took the exam yesterday and that really wasn't an issue- 200 questions and brutal. I probably outright guessed at half, and took a minimally educated guess at another 50. I hope that they don't send me back to med. school after they see my results!
