I was hoping some Canadian students, at any US Optometry school, could provide some insight into whether and how Canadian students are eligible to pay in-state tuition. What must I have to qualify? And does meeting all the requirements mean I will be allowed to pay in-state tuition? Right now I have my eyes on SUNY, UHCO, and NOVA.

I'm having a hard time as it is securing loans due to weak cosigners and would like to minimize my costs as much as possible. I realize Waterloo is a cheaper option, but I'm not sure what my odds are of getting in (I did reapply though).

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

You need to be a permanent resident (green card holder) or a US Citizen. Anything else and you are SOL.

Some schools won't even give you in state tuition even if you are a resident. Meaning, if you applied as an out of state student, you will continue to be an out of state student even if you have established residency.

I'll add $0.02 here.

I went to OD school at UW few years back. I applied from another undergrad institution and was also concerned about gaining admission. I had heard through the grapevine (I can't remember now where I heard this, but I recall it being from a reliable source) that some person who did their undergrad at UW didn't get accepted to UWSO, but they applied to SUNY as a backup.

SUNY ended up admitting this person to their OD/PhD program, which they said could take as little as 6 years to complete. This person had to pay out-of-state tuition the first year, but beginning their 2nd and for all remaining years, they'd pay in-state tuition - presumably because of their admission in the joint program.

A PhD is a whole other kettle of fish, but at the time - it seemed like a "last-chance" opportunity if you really couldn't find a means to pay for a US education.

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

Optogal, thanks for the tidbit. I've already completed a MSc degree, and happen to enjoy research, so I'm not completely against the OD/PhD route. I'll look into the program again and ask the admissions office more specific questions.

Thanks
