In what ways does BostonU overwhelm Harvard?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Uhhh... Hockey?

number of applicants for available spots

Uhh, THE FACT THAT Harvard is a great school and BU is just OK. BU med is good but not even close to Harvard. Also, Harvard has insane teaching hospitals while BUs are nothing special.

NONE BU doesnt even come close to overwhelming Harvard.

in the amount of debt you're likely to graduate with.

In terms of sheer name power, BU isn't going to outclass harvard. Not much outside of the top 10 can. However, BU could have some advantages depending on your interests. BU is the only school in Boston with a department specifically for family medicine, so if that's what you're specifically interested in I suppose that could be a plus. Also, BU is the hospital that serves most of the poor and uninsured population of Boston, which is predominantly black and hispanic, as opposed to Harvard which is more of a tertiary care hospital with people flying in all over the world to have procedures done. So if working with underserved populations interests you, BU has more to offer there.

Definitely hockey. I can't remember the last time Harvard has even made the finals of the Beanpot.
As for med schools, harvard crushes BU in number of gunners. Oh, and research and hospitals and all those middling things.

When I interviewed at BU a few years ago one of the interviewers claimed that due to the fact that Harvard's preclinical curriculum is entirely PBL most of the Harvard students end up taking board prep classes for step 1. He was more likely than not biased and I don't know how the board scores of the 2 places rack up. Especially since I ended up not attending either school. However it's something to think about; PBL based preclinical curriculum may not be for you (if you prefer something more structured).

Of course, graduating with the Harvard name behind you may outweigh all that. I have heard that with a Harvard degree, your feces lose the characteristic odor (at least you believe this is true).

I don't know what the Beanpot is, but I know that Harvard and BU don't play in the same league. Harvard plays in the ECAC, while BU plays in Hockey East, along with Boston College. Harvard won the ECAC division in 2002 and 2004, while BU didn't even make it into the NCAA tournament. They were ranked #8 in the Hockey East playoffs, though they did upset BC who who was #1 in Hockey East. But BC got an NCAA berth anyway from their record while BU was eliminated in the next round of the Hockey East playoffs.

Why are you comparing BU and Harvard? people don't even think other great med schools like Penn and UCSF compare to Harvard.

Anywyas. I bet BU has better looking girls and laid back class.

I think I'm having a coronary event.

If you learn nothing else from this thread, learn this: the beanpot is THE annual college hockey event in Boston. It is a tournament involving BC, BU, Harvard, and Northeastern. As you can see here, BU has more or less owned this tournament over the years. And by the way, BU was in the ECAC until 1984 when they bolted to join Hockey East.

Hope this helps. Not sure what this means about their ability to train you for medicine, but anyway.

BU really offended me...they never replied, and I finally withdrew my applications. At least Harvard sent me a quick rejection letter!

well, I personally don't think there is a huge, statistically significant difference between any of the "top 10" schools in terms of the medical education that you will receive. Not that my opinion matters much though.

A lot of people wouldn't agree with this. The clinical training at BU is supposed to be outstanding.

You can learn clinical medicine anywhere. all you need is to study. Some of the brightest people i worked with did not go to harvard.

come on...how can u know about all these rankings and not know about the beanpot?

I go/went to Rensselaer, so I follow the leage play. But I don't really know about the local tournaments. I only knew about BU since it was big news on USCHO.

Rogue leader, not knowing about the Beanpot is not a good sign.

And yes, harvard plays in the ECAC and BU plays in HE. There is such a thing as interleague play, and they play at least once during the regular season, and every three years during the first night of the Beanpot.
Additionally, the ECAC is considered a weaker league than HE, the CCHA, or the WCHA, so winning the ECAC is not a massive accomplishment.

And yes, BU did have a terrible year last year. It happens. If you look back over the past decade BU has been consistently good, while Harvard has dropped off from the late 1980s/early 90s. Regardless, the Beanpot is the most important event, and that's really only been between BU and BC for the past few years.
