Have y'all noticed the extreme level of inbredness this year? I thought my year was bad at some schools (notably southern residencies). This year seems like programs realized they should take care of their own.

i was told derm has typically been an inbred field but it really does seem like this year takes the cake. Not that I would complain about it since I'm someone who did benefit from a Texas school looking back within Texas to fill spots 🙂

Well they do call it the dirty dirty south for a reason.😀

Then why interview so many when the programs will end up being loyal to their own? They can at least be honest about it during the interviews that they will rank their own first. Maybe they rank their own higher so their own have at least one place to fall on instead of going unmatched. One program from the dirty dirty south called its interviewees "masterpieces" and insisted that the applicants go there. But ended up matching mostly their own! 😕

Love the double dirty.

I was thinking about doing two derm electives in texas (im from florida). Is this not a particularly smart decision? haha
I was also considering some other states but really wanted to relocate to Tx.

Texas Tech and UT Houston (and maybe Texas A&M--not sure on that one) will count your Derm electives as your interviews, which is a huge bonus.

I have only heard about Tech from second-hand sources, but I hear that it's a nice program. That's as much as I know.

UT Houston is a really impressive program--probably the most underrated program in the whole country--and, although I didn't match there I would have been very happy there.

UT Southwestern is notorious for not even granting interviews to many of their rotators, but I have heard of people matching there who did away rotations. It may be worth a try because although it's overrated in my opinion it's still a good place.

UTMB in Galveston is another hidden gem. Very nice faculty who truly treat the residents as peers with their own offices, lots of autonomy, etc. There are very decent beaches are blocks from the med center too, and how many programs in the country can boast that?

I think Baylor's program is still strong, but everything there is in flux, and in recent years they have had major reorganizations in other departments that have screwed a lot of residents and fellows. This hasn't happened in Derm yet, but watch out!

Texas A&M is another totally underrated place. Their surgery experience is top notch, and they have awesome support staff, electronic medical records, a very collegial atmosphere, and they are likely going to expand again to another new building. Temple, Texas is a good place for families, and if you're single Austin is not that far away. I thought Temple was going to be horrible, but it really isn't bad. There's a lot of revitalization going on with new bars, etc.

The other program is UT San Antonio. Wish I could tell you something about this place. Sorry.

thanks for all that information- i appreciate it.
I think Houston is at the top of my list for residency spots- I just dont know how to go about getting in 🙂
I am not super competitive but decent. I think my chances are slim being from Florida.
I know they have clinical fellowships there if you don't match.
Which programs in Tx are the least comp?

In my opinion the least competitive TX programs are:
1. UTMB Galveston
2. Texas Tech
3. UT San Antonio
4. Texas A&M

UTMB also has a brand new Austin program, but since it's in Austin I bet it'll be competitive right away. asmallchild also has ties to TX so he/she should be able to help too. What's your opinion, Dude/Dudette?

Remember, "least competitive" in derm means "highly super competitive" in reality.

thanks dude- you're awesome.

what are your thoughts on Eastern Virginia in Norfolk or Eastern Carolina in Greenville, NC? I know these are smaller programs...hear anything while interviewing?

I have to agree with DermMatch, of course, that all these places are really competitive despite being "less competitive."

I don't have any close ties to eastern virginia or east carolina. I remember being quite impressed with eastern virginia's program just from their web site and I met somebody else from there.

NC - As far as I know I am still on their waiting list despite already having Matched. 🙂 It was the one place that seemed to use the wait list card in a big way. Not sure if anyone actually moved off of it and into an interview slot. I'd be curious to know.

I would agree with all that. I also applied to the Austin program as it was brand new this year. Even as the "newbie", it will definitely surge in popularity soon because of the phenomenal location.
