I was thinking about doing two derm electives in texas (im from florida). Is this not a particularly smart decision? haha
I was also considering some other states but really wanted to relocate to Tx.
Texas Tech and UT Houston (and maybe Texas A&M--not sure on that one) will count your Derm electives as your interviews, which is a huge bonus.
I have only heard about Tech from second-hand sources, but I hear that it's a nice program. That's as much as I know.
UT Houston is a really impressive program--probably the most underrated program in the whole country--and, although I didn't match there I would have been very happy there.
UT Southwestern is notorious for not even granting interviews to many of their rotators, but I have heard of people matching there who did away rotations. It may be worth a try because although it's overrated in my opinion it's still a good place.
UTMB in Galveston is another hidden gem. Very nice faculty who truly treat the residents as peers with their own offices, lots of autonomy, etc. There are very decent beaches are blocks from the med center too, and how many programs in the country can boast that?
I think Baylor's program is still strong, but everything there is in flux, and in recent years they have had major reorganizations in other departments that have screwed a lot of residents and fellows. This hasn't happened in Derm yet, but watch out!
Texas A&M is another totally underrated place. Their surgery experience is top notch, and they have awesome support staff, electronic medical records, a very collegial atmosphere, and they are likely going to expand again to another new building. Temple, Texas is a good place for families, and if you're single Austin is not that far away. I thought Temple was going to be horrible, but it really isn't bad. There's a lot of revitalization going on with new bars, etc.
The other program is UT San Antonio. Wish I could tell you something about this place. Sorry.
