Hi all, I was a nanny for a 21-month-old four years ago during the summer and was wondering if it is appropriate to include that under "Work Experience" on ERAS, especially since I'm applying for a pediatric residency. I actually learned a lot that summer just from observing and interacting with the cute toddler!

Anyways, instead of saying "nanny," though, I'd probably list it as "caretaker" if that somehow makes it sound a little more professional.

Any thoughts?

I'd have said "nanny" myself. Pediatricians won't be bothered by the "n" word, IMHO.🙂 Sure, why not include it? It won't really affect your matching somewhere one way or the other.

List it (as nanny not caretaker, that sounds weird). Seriously, interaction you have with children is a bonus, so since it is fairly recent work, I would definitely include it.

Thought I'd try my hand at bumping an old post, since I hate to create a new thread and my question is along the same lines.

I am wondering if I should mention the time that I spent as a camp counselor when I was in HS (>10 years ago now!). It was a rather challenging experience, as I was responsible for 6-8 little girls 24 hours a day for a week at at time (got BLS certified etc). I mention it briefly in my PS, just in the context of "I've always loved working with kids, such as <insert various camp counselor/tutoring positions here>." Given that it's in my PS, I feel like it would be odd to not expand upon it in the experiences section, but I also think it looks odd because the date is sooo long ago. I should also mention that I came to the decision to go into peds rather late (~1 month ago) and so am scrambling a bit for ways to demonstrate my interest in the field / affinity for kids etc.

I'm not totally attached to having it in there, though, and just want to do whatever seems the most appropriate.

I think that is a very applicable work experience, and would put it. I would also put the nanny thing down, from the OP.

Work experience is the one field I think it would be okay to have something old in, b/c honestly in the last 3 years, we don't have a lot of opportunity to work b/c of the time commitment of med school.
