I wrote a paper in favor of legal euthanasia for a writing class and won a Distinguished Writing award for it (only 3rd place though). It's posted online on our school website. Is it wise to include a paper on such a medically sensitive issue on my application?

Include it only on your Cali apps. 😛

You could list distinguished writer award without listing the topic of your paper.

Yeah you could do that. You could also write down the class that this paper was for and who judged the paper etc.

If you put the title in it, it will bring up something to talk about in the interview, but you might meet someone that's the complete opposite of you and it can be very hard to defend your view. So definitely don't include the title if it's one sided.

Just lump this paper award together with some other awards you got. Don't make it it's separate category.

👍

An interesting topic worth discussing... but probably not in an interview. I think it could be pretty polarizing for some folks.

yeah, this could be a controversial thing to have on your app... you don't want this to the the highlight that your interviewers remember you by, whether or not they agree with you.

haha, okay I'll just add it as a vague "writing award" and hope they don't google me. I argued that it should be legal, not that doctors should do it now, so I think it couldn't be *too* bad, but I'd definitely like to avoid a moral debate.

Just include it on your CV in the "Honors/Awards" section. It's not something to really throw in the face of Adcoms like a publication (1st/2nd author) in an established journal.
