Hey! I'm an incoming M1 at SKMC from a major school in the Northeast (originally from here). I've fully committed and am very excited to being my path in medicine! However, as with any change to a new environment, I'm scared about some things and wanted to hear from alumni or current SKMC students 🙂

Firstly, I am worried about making friends and having a solid group. Medical school from the outside seems so isolating, and with having to find an apartment and live on my own, I am very scared that I won't fit in or meet my "group" of people. Do you have any advice or tips on how to make friends, or opportunities that you wish you would have taken?

I am also worried about the academics. My undergrad is a very rigorous school, but medical school just seems like a different beast. I'm imagining continuously drowning in work, not understanding anything, and just barely floating to survive. Is this true? Or is it manageable? Any advice?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

Based on your username, join a music group or two outside class. You will 100% have time M1-2. I've been continually in a choral program for like 16 years and it helps a lot.

I had similar concerns. Your classmates will likely host a lot of social events and you can go to those whenever you have time to meet new people. Also if you live close to other students, that's a super easy way to make new friends. Def don't worry to much about that. The work is more than undergrad for sure, but it's not overwhelming if you stay on top of things and just care about doing well in school and hanging out sometimes. I will say it has been pretty tough trying to balance research with social life and school for me. I think one of them has to give esp if youre grinding for something competitive. You might have better time management skills haha.

Some advice from my perspective:

1. A lot of the social dynamics of med school are like undergrad or frankly even high school again. Be willing to put yourself out there and join clubs/activities etc. to get to know your classmates. And try to get involved in stuff even outside the med school realm; I’m personally trying to branch out as much as I can to meet friends (and date) out of med school
2. Academically it’s all about staying on top of things. As long as you’re doing stuff every day (yes, you will need to work a little on weekends too) you will be more than fine. Put in the work and you’ll succeed.
