I know this has been asked in a variety of ways here but there is just so much conflicting info out there. I am an incoming prelim who wants to continue training in IM. Initially applied for an advanced specialty, but ended up partially matching at a prelim only (university program). I have no interest in reapplying to my advanced specialty, and most likely want to pursue categorical IM. No red flags in my application and good step 2 score.
- Should I apply to IM through the match? If yes, how many programs should I apply to? (30? 500?) Should I target community programs, or will academic/affiliated consider me as well? I would probably want to pursue a fellowship in the future.
- How hard is it to actually find a PGY2 IM spot? Some say very easy from a prelim, some say these spots are hard to find.
- Should I get a service for applications (med school insiders, ace med boards, etc?) and an interview coach? Any recommendations?
- I have not reached out to my PD yet since my school advised me to wait until August. Not sure how I feel about this.
