I've long been receiving job adverts and info regarding CME/conferences since I've been a Rad Onc resident. However, more recently I've been getting "marketing" adverts from academic oncology centers nationwide. Most of the time these 'advertorials' are far outside my catchment area (e.g. East Coast, Midwest). Two questions:

1. Any ideas as to who is selling my name/mailing address? I am assuming ASTRO . . .
2. Why the heck would I care about some random cancer center across the country when I can refer my train wrecks to UCSF or Stanford? 😀

How does it work in PP, I'm confused what the threshold is for when you would refer a patient to a major academic center.

It depends on the clinical scenario, your training and experience. Common situations I refer for include: desire to enroll on specific clinical trials, second opinions and extremely complex cases (usually these involve re-irradiation near a critical organ).

However the conditions for referral are wildly variable across the spectrum of private practice.
