If you are working full time with a research mentor on your own research project, how independent should you be?
-How long should you try to figure something out on your own before asking for help?
-How often should you update your research mentor on the progress of your project? Email or face to face meeting?
-If your research mentor suggests an idea, would it be ok to discuss alternatives that you think would be better?
-How proactive should you be about getting publications?

This sounds like it really depends on the project. Its clearly better to ask for help than take too long to figure things out on your own.
