I am just curious the future of independent pharmacist with the walgreen and walmarts expanding. Why not more students consider opening one after a couple years. It seems like most people either do retail or hospital their whole life.

Maybe I don't understand this correctly, but it seems you're answering your own question. With Walgreens and Wal-mart expanding, why would students risk opening a pharmacy a couple years after incurring such a large debt to pay for education. Independents don't generally thrive in competition against the major chains. You'd essentially have to find a niche or go where the big chains haven't gone yet and hope the don't come knocking in the next few years.

I did a rotation at an independent pharmacy a few months ago and the most interesting part about it was its location. It was on the same corner as a walgreens and cvs. Granted it was a very busy intersection but I thought this was a pretty ballsy move by the owner. From what I could tell his business was thriving too. The key, according to him, was to work for a major chain, become a pharmacy manager and then open one. He actually opened it across from the cvs he had managed and took many of his customers with him.

I, actually, would enjoy running my own indy store. I have worked at my store ( a independent) for 2 years. I have seen us grow from ~120 scripts per day to ~200 per day. The store and name has been around since 1949, but was recently bought by a young guy. He has done so much with the store. He has brought in hospice and LTC accounts, and has introduced compounding. It shows that you can do what you really put your mind to.
