Hi guys,
just wondering you all thought of Indiana and other midwest residencies for anesthesia? Thanks!

heard that IU takes a lot of their own.

Indiana does seem to take a lot of their own. Does anyone have any idea though of what this program is like, especially if you are not from Indiana? An "inbred" program would be the bad end of the spectrum, but I just haven't heard much about this program.

Hey Guys!
I rotated through IU and it is a solid program. All the residents are happy. Didactics are good, a wide variety of cases, they push you early on. Nakata, the program director is very resident-focused. they are also improving the regional anesthesia portion. however, i'd say that 90% of the residents there were former IU students. Its tough to get ranked unless they get to know you (by rotations). supposedly they're trying to change that but this may take a while... hope that helps, let me know if you have any other q's. oh yeah, heard RUSH is a work-horse type of place...poor education, etc

Yes, IU takes a lot of their own, but their program is large. Of the 25 CA-1 spots this year, 7 were not from IU. Considering other programs only have 7 spots total, the odds really aren't that bad if you're not from IU. I'm an MSIII doing my required anesthesia rotation right now, and Dr. Nakata told me this yesterday.
