Indiana Secondary?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I haven't and I'm waiting on that one.

I haven't received one yet, but shall be writing the admissions committee describing why they should send one to me now that I am a resident of another state. By the way, it's not really a secondary, but rather forms for your LOR's.

Herp

just got mine in the mail yest. (i'm an indiana resident)
some forms that need to be attached to the LOR's. (1 science, 1 non science, 1 personal, and a dean's (disicipline report only) evaluation if applicable). oh and a check for $45!
hope that helps 🙂
Jon

Just received mine on July 31st and I'm a non-resident at this point. Interviews start at the end of August which is earlier than most schools. I love that everyone who receives a supplemental application is invited for an interview.

Herp

it's pretty cool that all the secondaries get interviews, depending how you look at it....

on the one hand, they really try to see as many people as possible so you know you were actually considered, as opposed to some schools where you feel like they didn't read your app but took your money anyhow.

on the other hand, when you go to interview there are usually around 100 other people interviewing. check out interview feedback. most people have 2 interviewers at once - last year they started with a standard set of q's (about high school!) and went from there. i didn't like my interview too much, but I guess it went well.

the best part is that they'll interview you before you even have all your secondary stuff in - they just won't make a decision until it's finished. and they make decisions at the same time every month so it limits the time you spend waiting at the mailbox!

I am wondering what percentage of applicants they actually interview. If they are interviewing 100 applicants at a time and they did that every other week from August thru March, they would certainly be able to see everyone. So the questions is do they really screen candidates or do they interview most of the 1700 applicants?

Herp

I actually just got a small postcard in the mail saying that they received my AMCAS, and that they will notify me if I made it to the cut to the secondary.

I wonder when they give non-residents the app? That is, if they choose to take me...🙂🙂

Thanks,

-Ice

Ice,
I received the same post card and the secondary one day apart, kind of strange. Even though they send the post card it could just mean that they weed out the extremely low applicants and interview the rest. I am a non-resident and have already received the secondary, although I do have ties to the state. If you submitted your application early I assume you will receive one soon. Do you have any ties to the state? Why do you want to go to IUPUI?

Herp

...from IU's webpage

Eligibility/interviews. Indiana residents who have a grade point average (GPA) of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale and an MCAT score of at least 22 are eligible for an interview. In general, nonresident applicants must have a GPA of at least 3.8 and superior Medical College Admission Test scores in order to be invited for an interview. The applications of nonresidents who have attended college in Indiana or who have other close ties to the State may be given greater consideration.

They interview almost everyone from Indiana...

i just have that stupid post card so far.. i am an indiana resident w/ 10+ in each MCAT section and a 3.8 from a good university... i thought i'd be sitting pretty w/ adcoms at IU...so i'm just a little paranoid about not immediatley recieving my interview offer.. thats all.... hope i get it soon.... good luck to all who have...

I'm sure you'll get an interview. Although my graduating GPA was >3.5 and I graduated with Distiction the AMCAS calculation shows it as only a 3.15 or so. Plus, my MCAT's were signicantly lower than your (retake in 14 days). No need to fret as you most definitely receive a secondary in the next two weeks.

I know what their website says but I don't believe they screen that rigorously for out-of-state applicant as you can see my credentials, even though I have strong ties to the state. How many in-state to out-of-state apply?

you have nothing to worry about....last year IU accepted 60% of interviewed residents. Since they interview nearly everyone and your scores are great, I really doubt you have anything to worry about. Inteviews don't start until September. You will probably be in the first round of interviews and be accepted by mid-October (when they first let people know). AMCAS has been sitting on my primary for the last month so I don't even have a secondary for IU yet. Best of luck to you!

Fall 2002

Out of State: 1,146 applied:252 inteviewed:76 accepted: 30 enrolled

In state 558 applied:492 interviewed: 298 accepted: 250 enrolled

for those of you guys waiting on secondaries, don't worry at all. I called on Friday and asked the admissions lady (who, by the way, is incredibly nice unlike some jackasses I speak to on the phone at other univs). They just started sending out secondaries as AMCAS apps come out of review, so it may be a little while before they get to everyone.

As far as the secondary app itself, there's no essay, basically you have to go around your school and get a few signatures (like you need the Dean of Students to sign and say you haven't committed any crimes while at the school).

The interviews are offered to all those who submit secondaries, but they don't expect to get all secondaries back, so she said that they generally send out more secondaries than what is listed in the MSAR as the number of people interviewed last yr. However, if you do get a secondary (which means you've got an interview), you've made a huge cut if youre out of state especially.

Also, for those of you who are out of state like me, I also asked if its ridiculous for us to apply to the school. She mentioned that something like 30-40% of people come from out of state, so they keep a fairly diverse population in their med school, so keep ur hopes up 🙂

Hope this info helps

-Cantal

Thanks for all data. I am hoping my higher MCAT scores and EC's will reflect positively on the ADCOM's and they will accept me this year. I also hope both of my interviewers show up this year instead of just one who really wasn't interested in me but simply wanted to fill out the required sheet with information.

Herp

thanks for all the great responces.. and cheering me up... that not recieving a secondary was starting to bother me.. thanks again

Cantal,

Not to be a downer, but she probably meant 30-40 PEOPLE from out of state, and not percent. IU pretty much always has less then 10% out-of-staters actually enroll. But, I guess last year of all people accepted 20% were out-of-state....but much fewer actually attended.

that would definitely suck, but from the numbers she gave me of entering students (which was 270 or something right near that), 30-40 would seem like a really small number, even for a school heavily funded by the state. I didn't check last year's numbers, but my outdated MSARs from four years ago gives 215 vs 55 as the entering class of in staters vs out of staters.

As for interviews, my old MSAR gives 277/1528 out of state applicants received interviewed (which I don't know if it was the same process as this year) along with 568/631 in state people interviewed. Out of state got half the number of interviews, which seems like a decent number to me.

Either way, I didn't check last year's numbers, but I don't think there's reason to believe they are that bleak 🙂 I hope you guys applying in state or out have good luck this year ;-)

-Cantal

The numbers I posted a few posts back are from the current US News and World Report online guide....for whatever that is worth. Good luck. I hope everybody gets in (only after I do of course!). 😉

I e-mailed the admissions department and will hopefully receive a response next week. Most of the numbers people are posting seem reasonable. Also they start interviews in late August so some people should actually be receiving an official interview offer any day now, so long as they turned in their money. I don't believe they wait until all letters are received before mailing invitations. I think they just want to make sure they have the $45 and then it's go time. Good luck to everyone in the process, it's a great school. Does anyone know if they employ medical actors at all the campuses or just the Gary one?

Herp

Good luck to all you IU applicants it is a great school and the people in admissions are really friendly and helpful, so don't hesitate to call them. The assistant director of admissions Karen Smartt is also a nice lady and will readily answer any questions you may have.

i am in the same boat. im instate, have good gpa and mcat scores, and come from a top ten school...and all i got was the postcard...got it friday. i better get the secondary sometime next week ie monday lol.

what's the indiana supplemental like? what do you have to do? just list the people writing your rec letters?

how many rec letters do they require and what type? (sci prof, non sci, physician)

thanks =)

Technically, there is no secondary. They ask for a $45 donation, transcripts and letters of recommendation from 1 science, 1 non-science, dean of students (disciplinary actions), 1 personal and 1 from a graduate advisor if applicable. I like the way they have it set up.

Herp

The letter of recomendation from a personal source? what is that from an employer? I have 2 science, 1 non, and 1 from the E.R. Doc i volunteered w/ do i need more?

This is exactly what they have:
Personal evaluation from. This form should be completed by a person who has known you for several years and who can evaluate your personality, character, and general fitness for the study and practice of medicine.

I simply used a gentleman from the U.S.G.S. that I to do Bat research with. I suppose it can basically be from anyone you choose. You should be getting the secondary very soon my friend, then the interview, then the acceptance.

Herp

got my interview scheduled for Aug 27!!!
first day of classes---but oh well 🙂

Jon

Jonathanamine,
When did they send you your secondary? What was the turn around time once you sent it in? Are you in-state?

Herp

got my indiana secondary today in the mail.

jon (who got the interview invite)...did they have your LORs already or did they give you the invite without your LORs? im instate as well... my LORs are being held up...but just wondering if i rattle of this "secondary" if i can go on and get the interview squared away. thanks.

Only 1 science? Really?!?!? That is the best news I have had so far in this thing called admissions. So far I have 3 letters being currently written, but have to wait on another (a science one that will be okay, but not nearly as strong as my other science letter from an IU med school prof who told me he WANTS to write me a letter...before I even asked). You mentioned a personal evaluation form. Does that come with the secondary and does it have to be used? My school (Purdue) gave me a generic personal evaluation form and I have already given it to the guy writing my evaluation. Can the letters be sent in before the secondary comes just to speed things up? I am still waiting on AMCAS to verify my primary (it has been over a month). I hope I am not too far behind. I would love to get an early interview from IU so maybe (fingers crossed) I can be accepted by Oct or Nov. Good luck everyone and congrats on already have an interview spot jonathan I wish I hadn't put off submitting my primary so I could be getting interview offers too!

hey guys,

here's some more info, hope it helps:

i'm an indiana resident, certified on 6/3, submitted 6/6....yeah ok i was anal about getting the amcas in 🙂
to answer the question about LOR's, they DO NOT need to be in before you're scheduled an interview time. my roomie's letters won't go out until next week and he has a interview slot.

there's a thing on the interview letter that says, "please try to have as many of the LOR's as possible before the interview...same with transcripts (i.e. summer classes) if that applies.

that's all I got- hope to see some of ya'll soon (hopefully next fall at IUPUI!!!) 🙂

Jon

thanks jon for the info. im sending in my secondary asap then. i just want to get iu squared away so i can go into the rest of the process knowing that no matter what happens i have an acceptance (hopefully). and so i can withdraw from schools where i wouldnt go if i get into iu...save some money and time.

nice to see the hoosiers coming out too on the board.

To the hoosiers out there...

Is anyone else fairly set on going to IU? I am only applying to four schools total. Since IU accepts about 60% of hoosiers they interview (anyone with above a 3.2 GPA and 24 MCAT), it seems like my chances are much greater at IU then anywhere else (less then 10% acceptance rate at most for other schools). I am fairly confident that I will get into IU, but couldn't quite bring myself to only applying there. I applied to two "better" schools, just in case, and one other at IU's level. I figured I will save a lot of time and money this way (as long as I get into IU). Do you think that is a bad idea? It seems like most people on SDN are applying to anywhere from 12-30+ schools. How about you?

I applied to 20 between MD and DO schools. If I was accepted at IU I would certainly withdraw my application from the majority of the other schools. The big thing for me would be to try and attain in-state tuition classification. As of right now I am a resident of Colorado. However, I was an Indiana resident for most of my life. Plus, if my spouse was to work as a Vet while there I hope they could change my status, otherwise it would be fairly expensive. I am using tuition rates as a factor in deciding where I want to end up. As for you, if you have good stats then you should be a shoe in for IUPUI. They accept a large number of in-stater's. However, if you want to play it safe and not potentially have to apply again, I may add a couple schools to your list.

Herp

holy moley, interviews are going out already? That's _amazing_ turn around time. I submitted my secondary to them like a week ago and haven't heard any reply, you guys must have gotten in super early!

-Cantal

Finally got that pesky secondary from IU.. sending in my donation of $45 tommrow. I am just wondering if i should send in the letters from the pre med committee, which IU lets you do, or fill out their forms. I have letters from 2 science, 1 non science, and 1 Clinical. But i'm not sure if that is a good idea? Should i go and find the faculty againan and have them fill out the IU forms.. or just send in the letters.... any input will be greatly appreicated especially from anyone at IU. ( i am an in stater..)

got my interview as well...august 27th. i'm going to try to change it though...i attend college outside of indiana and that's our first week of classes...so yeah...not exactly good timing. but i dont want them to move way back either...so who knows. i get a feeling that is the first interview day so everyone is being scheduled for the 27th right now.

oh yeah...i got my interview thing two days after getting the secondary...so i dont think you even need your 45 bucks in to get one.

hey, jon, if i go then, i may "see" you there.

Two quick questions for those who got an interview (contrats btw)

1. How long after you sent in your Secondary did you recieve an interview.

2. Did you get your LOR's In before had does it matter?

Hi!

I just got my interview letter from IU. The letter was postmarked (August 4) before I had even sent my LORs or check in. (I'm in-state too.) Best of luck.

they don't need to have either your secondary or your LORs to give you an interview. i got my interview invite like i said before two days after getting the secondary in the mail. and since i sent in just the check the day after, there is no way they had anything before sending out the invite. hoosiers get an interview as long as they have +22mcat and +3.2gpa. so i dont think they care about LORs untill interview/actual selection. because even if people checked you had problems with drug and alcohol (anybody else find those forms just a tad absurd?)...by their webpage and rules you still get an interview.

Does IU wait for verified amcas apps, or do they send secondaries based upon the prelim amcas info?

If your an out of state Applicant IU waits for the whole AMCAS app; i am sure. Because they screen for out of states.. for instates i'm not sure.
