I’m a psych intern at Indiana University and when I was applying last year, I searched this site for feedback on the program, but couldn’t find any. So, I thought it might be helpful to those applying this year to learn something about this great program.

As a 4th year medical student, I interviewed at 15 residency programs, including many top ranked programs around the country. I was surprised by how much I immediately liked IU’s program, considering I had not heard much about it on the interview trail. I initially decided to look into IU because of several factors, such as location, proximity to family, and the couples match.

During the interview day, I was struck by how many residents turned out to attend dinner and lunch, considering that at many programs I met only a few residents. Plus, the residents were so friendly, enthusiastic and well-balanced. My impression of the residents at the interview dinner still holds true, as everyone here has gone out of their way to make sure that my transition to residency was as smooth as possible. Residents here not only have professional lives, but they also have personal lives. IU is very family-friendly, which was one of the primary factors that attracted me to the program. Many of the residents and their families get together during monthly social events. Overall, the program, including the program director, is laid-back. The program director seems to really care about each resident getting the most out of their training experience. He’s very responsive to feedback and suggestions, many of which are brought up during the weekly resident business meetings.

The tremendous diversity of training sites and patient populations at IU is another main reason that I decided to rank the program. We train at Wishard Memorial Hospital, Indy’s county hospital, which has an inpatient unit and a walk-in crisis center staffed by clinicians and psychiatrists 24/7. Other primary sites include Indiana University Hospital (private), the VA medical center, LaRue Carter state hospital, and Riley Children’s Hospital. Most other programs offer experiences with only one or two of these patient populations. Residents experience this diversity of patient populations and healthcare systems during inpatient and outpatient rotations, consult psychiatry, and while on call. Here’s how the program is structured:

PG1: 4 mo. Primary Care (1 or 2 mo. inpatient/ED, 2-3 months outpatient)
2 mo. Neurology (outpatient and/or inpatient)
6 mo. inpatient psych (3 mo. each either at VA, Wishard or LaRue Carter)
Call: 4-5 times/mo (includes 1 weekend call) during inpatient psychiatry (first 5 calls are training calls with upper level resident)

PG2: 3 mo. inpatient psych
1 mo Emergency Psychiatry in the crisis walk-in clinic (day shifts)
1 mo. Forensic Psych (includes ECT training)
1 mo. geriatric psych (inpatient)
6 mo. child psych @ LaRue Carter and Riley
Call: 2-3 times/mo (includes 1 weekend call)

PG3: Adult outpatient x 12 mo.
No call

The city of Indianapolis itself is very livable. It has many of the amenities of Chicago, but with a much more affordable cost of living, warmer weather, nicer people, and definitely less traffic. There are beautiful parks and trails, a rich cultural life, top sports teams, amazing restaurants, tons of bars and great shopping.

I encourage you to check out IU Psych and Indianapolis! I’d be happy to answer any questions on this thread.🙂

...and I thought I was a shameless shill for my residency program!

As a former resident of the State of Indiana, I agree Indy is pretty livable as cities go. I would love to go back there for school or residency.
