Does anyone know anything about or is pursuing industry based pharmacy? I've heard a lot about the retail aspect, but was wondering if anyone had any insight on the corporate side of pharmacy. If anyone has any information or can direct me to some it would really be appreciated. Thanks.

BTW, I've already looked at the Pfizer career webpage. 🙂

I have two classmates who are vice presidents of major pharmaceutical companies. What do you want to know???? It depends on what side of industry you want to get into. If you want the business side, you need to get business background in addition to pharmaceutical background. If you want to interface with r&d & the clinical study arm side, you need to become familiar with those folks.

One of the best ways to become exposed to this side of pharmacy is to do a summer internship. Go to the company websites. Internships are listed, but you often need to have an inside contact. If you go to pharmacy school at a research university, contact one of the clinical site sponsers of a study. They all know each other. It will be to your advantage if you live in an area of pharmaceutical research - SF, San Diego, NJ, NC, etc...

Thanks for your response. I did a search on internships within pharmaceutical corporations and I came up with a few that I will be keeping my eye on. Thanks for the suggestion...I don't know why I didn't think of that sooner.

If someone wants to work in the pharmaceutical industry, does he/she need a PhD? I heard that pharmaceutical industires are looking for PharmD's that have PhDs as well. I think it's great that UIC has a PharmD/PhD program. But what about schools that don't have this joint program. After 4 years of pharmacy school, do you have to go back to school to get your PhD? And that will take probably 4 more years? And is the PhD you get considered a PhD in Pharmacy or do we need a PhD in Chemistry, Biology, etc.??

Well, I'm looking to go more into the business side of the pharmaceutical industry, so I'm really focusing on programs that have a PharmD/MBA program. I think if you're wanting to do research a Ph.D. will be helpful, but I'm unsure of how beneficial it may be in the long run. I'm new to this whole process, so I don't have all the answers. I just know that I don't want to do retail pharmacy and I'm more interested in the corporate side of it.
