Hi there, I've just joined this site. I was referred from someone on MomMD. I am working on my BA in psychology and plan to attend to med school with the goal of becoming a psychiatrist. I have found so much helpful info so far but always looking for more. If there is anyone out there with some advice or info about being a psychiatrist I am all ears. I've read that a lot of people are majoring in science or chem. I think that majoring in psychology is excellent seeing how I plan to become a psychiatrist. Any input on that? I am excited to meet my fellow psych lovers. 😀

i got a bs in psych. it's proved marvelously helpful. i learned many things in psychology that're pretty much glossed over in med school... best of luck to ya!

Psychology is a good choice for undergrad if you're sure you want to do psychiatry in medical school. As you may know, however, you've got to complete all the pre-med requirements regardless. For most, the most convenient thing is simply to major in chem or bio, and take more advanced classes in that setting.

Do a search for psychiatry pre-med requirements or look through the older posts...this has been discussed a lot in previous posts. One thing that seems consistently to be good advice is to take some classes not required as a pre-med, but will help you a lot in medical school, such as physiology, anatomy, biochem, etc. Generally, these classes are very light compared to their medical school counterparts, but will give you at least some exposure to it so that it's not so foreign when you see it again on top of 5 other rough classes in med school, where you're competing against a lot of other already-proven students.

Good luck to you.
:luck:

What they said--plus make sure that you take a course or two in molecular neuroscience to "toughen up" that psych major. Behavioral neuroscience is fun, too, to start making the connections between brain biology and behavior.

Thanks all for the info. I will definately start some research. I want to be as prepared as possible. 🙂
