Hi guys,
Iam a med student from A.P,India and iam interested in taking the USMLE,could anybody give tips and suggestions on how to prepare for the exam and what to read ,when is the best time to give the exam and stuff like that.
Thanks a lot.

That s a pretty long subject my friend.
In very short, you should get the '' First aid for the USMLE step1'', which is basically a guide with info about the procedure you have to follow, topics on which you should concentrate as well as a list with books rated by students that have taken the exam. Basically everyone that takes this exam has this book.
As for when to take it, well, basically you will take it when you feel ready for it. That said, timing also depends on your school s curriculum, how good you want(or need) to do on it, how much time you can give for it, etcetc. However, you have to have completed your basic science years(in Europe that s 3 years, don t know how it is in India) to be eligible to take the exam.
Until you get your hands on the book I mentioned, though, you can check the following: www.ecfmg.org, which organizes the exam for non American med students
Hope it helps.

U.S. med students take it after our 2nd year, right before starting clinical clerkships. In other words, we're under some fairly significant time pressure. Most schools give anywhere from 1 month to 6-7 weeks of summer vacation after year 2. As such, you might come across study schedules that are 30 days long with 8 hours of study each days. That kind of schedule, or some variation of it, is pretty typical for the "average" U.S. med student, so it probably won't apply to an internation student.

You definitely want "First Aid for the USMLE Step 1" as your starting point like theodore mentioned. It's very highly regarded. There's an advice section in there for international students.
