I am sub-3.0 and I received a letter from UDM dental titled
'Information for applicants with weak academic records or Grades lower than "C" achieved'
For those srudents with a weak academic record the key question to ask oneself is : "is my record indicative of my true ability?" If it is, you are asking too much of yourself when you aspire to professional school. If it is not indicative of your potential, why not?
If it is your intent to better your academic record, it is important to enroll (re-enroll) at a four year college or unversity where you should take a full academic load, heavy in science. Meet your academic couselor, or better, the pre-professional advisor, and explain your goals. Most dental schools admissions officers would be happy to speak with advisors to come up with a mutually acceptable course of action.
For those students with grades below C in a prerequisite or strongly reccomended (Organic Chem and Cell Bio) courss(s), you have two choices. You can retake the couse(s) in which you received the lower than C grade (an A or B is expected in a retake). The other choice is to take an upper level course (in the same department or discipline where the lower than C grade was earned) and perform well (receieving a grade of B or better).
If you have already graduated and received your baccalaureate degree, you might consider enrolling as a post-baccalaureate, non-degree candidate. One might also consider entering a masters or doctoral program. The program should be one that you would consider purssuing if you did not attend dental school. Applicants should be candid with program directors about their plans to enter dental school
Many dental schools are less concerned when the applicant's GPA and more interested in applicants who have shown a STRONG STEADY ACADEMIC IMPROVEMENT, This is a great help to the applicant who may have had a poor start in college and who is in a 'mathematical hole' from which they cannot climb out.
thoughts anyone?...anyone else get this letter?
