I am preparing to apply to DO schools in the next few weeks. Finances are tight this year, but I have decided to apply to LECOM, OSU, and PCOM. LECOM is the one I am most excited about. Lots of different reasons, but I really do like the things I have read, and I have talked to the admissions counselors about a hundred times asking questions and for advice. I have 2 questions: first, who has experience with LECOM? I want to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Second, strictly speaking numbers, how do these look--3.5 (overall), 3.4 (science) and MCAT 23, plus a Master of Medical Science Degree (Physician Associate) from Yale University and 2 years experience as a Family Practice/Emergency Medicine PA

Kazzer,
I just completed my first year at Lecom. You wanted the good, the bad, and the ugly. I should tell you that I'm in the Problem Based Learning Pathway and my experience will be somewhat different than the Lecture Based students. With the experience you have you are you considering the PBLP?

The school in general is a very friendly down to earth place where you can learn a tremendous amount, meet some great people, and almost enjoy the experience (If you don't stress out over grades or tests--these are a problem for me.)

The good about PBL--the flexibility, you decide when to meet(with your group), when to study, when to sleep(more room for this in your schedule in PBl because you don't have to sit thru lectures that you don't need). Also good is that you (with your group) pick what you learn and are tested on.
I find that I have more motivation to learn things because they are relevant to the patient in the case that we are working on.
The good about Lecture Based--You have the material that you have to know for the test. It may be a 3" binder thick but that is where your test questions come from.

The Bad about PBL-- you decide what material is important(may not be what the prof who is writing the ?? thinks is important) Board review books help tremendously in pointing out the must knows.
The bad about LDP--Attendance policy--you must come to class and listen to lectures even if you do not need to to learn the material. They take attendance. Not every day but enough that they keep a list of who is naught and who isn't. Dress policy--basically business wear--not friday casual.

The Ugly--well, not much. The facility is a little cramped now--soon to be 3 times as large, with a much larger library, fitness center, and cafe. A few professors that may drive you insane (mostly personality issues--my theory is that it goes along with the Ph.D.)but most are more that helpful and willing to go the extra mile. I am generally an easy going person that doesn't let little things get me too upset.

I forgot the numbers. You shouldn't have a problem getting in provided your interview goes well. Good Luck
