Was wondering if anyone had insight into MCW. I know they take a huge class and a good number of people off the waitlist. How would you say they rank against other schools? Read their websites and was hoping to see what others view as their Weaknesses and Strengths. Thanks in advance for the responses!

They are ranked 50 in research and 42 for primary care by USNEWS. 🙂

I am prob gonna start at mcw in the fall. You can find many of their strenghts on their website. I was suprised how well known it is nationwide. I live in GA and my eye doc asked what i was doing ( school or work). I told him i was gonna start med school prob at mcw and said it was a great school with an even better eye program.

Things i dont like soo much about the school, weather and the long lecture/lab hours, usually 8:30-5.

I'll most likely be attending MCW as well. I really like the hospitals available to do rotations. From what I've heard from the students, including the one interviewing me, the faculty and staff go pretty far to make sure that you succeed in school. The school seems very supportive. There are a couple things I dislike about the school. Research is not built into the curriculum unlike some schools that are now requiring a research project. While I don't particularly love research, having time cut out of the day to do it helps come residency time. You do have the option of taking five years or doing summer research. There's no electives either for the first two years. There does seem to be opportunities that you can seek out outside of class such as their family practice group.

Now that I have time to write more, these are the +/- of MCW in my opinion.

+
atmosphere is very laid back and student friendly
block exam schedule
nice facilities
low cost of living

_
the first year lecture hall looked uncomfortable, I want plush seats!

no undergrad, thus no intramurals and no nonmedical facilities, infact its just the medical students and a few hundred science grad students

cold winters for those who don't appreciate WI climate

Thats all that comes to mind.

I'll also be attending MCW in fall and I was quite impressed when I visited there. I'm from wisconsin so my top two choices were UW where I'm still on the waiting list and MCW. Previous to seeing the campus I had almost ruled the school out because I love Madison so much, I'm doing my undergrad here at Edgewood College,a small private liberal arts school. After visiting my views changed drastically. It's in a very good part of Milwaukee...parts can be bad, well for wisconsin standards. Milwaukee is a good size too, not too big or small and there is plenty to do. I spent the night with a few M2 students through the host program and they loved it there. If I do get into UW Madison it'll be a tough choice. Milwaukee definitely has a better hospital.
Good Luck I'm sure you'd enjoy it there.

Im not too sure about this one. Froedert handles alot more trauma, but from what i've heard, the UW hospital has much higher ratings among patients and physicians alike; not to mention it is a leading transplant center worldwide (does more kidney transplants per year than any other hospital in the world).

Froedert is an awesome facility and a good place to do your rotations though!

You can do all of your MCW rotations in Milwaukee, but UW doesn't have sufficient facilities in the area, so you'll be traveling around the state, I believe. I've rarely heard a complaint about Froedtert, and they just had a few monstrous additions onto the hospital.

You're right. I should have specified...UW has a great hospital as well and it's probably better in certain specialities. They both have pros and cons and either one would provide plenty of opportunities. Milwaukee is more diverse and does give you the ability to do all your rotations there although I know a lot of students prefer to travel. Madison is also building a new childrens hospital and Milwaukee's children's hospital is probably one of the best in the nation...don't quote me on that I should do my homework... UW's med school is also brand new and is hooked up as far as technology goes...MCW is only 4 years old I think and up to date...really they're both great schools. MCW just happens to be 10k more for instaters but how significant is that when you finish up.

Not to burst your bubble, but they actually take relatively few people off the waitlist. Last year, it was ~90 and the year before, only 21. They are one of the few schools intelligent enough to accept more students than will actually attend right off the bat so they don't have a huge waitlist (relative to their class size of 204). Most schools are still under the impression that everyone accepted will actually choose their school over the other offers. Get real, even the big dogs like Harvard (1.51 accept for each attend), WashU (2.76:1), and Hopkins (1.99:1) have people cancel on them.

As for weaknesses, the only one I seem to have run across would be the location. If you're from a big city such as SF, NYC or Boston, or from a warm climate such as SoCal, AZ or FLA it will probably be a big change.

Apart from that, they have a really solid program with very happy students who want to be there (from what I saw on interview day).

I was very happy with their program and it looks like I'll be going there myself.

And the year before that, it was over 250. 😉 Bubble restored.

What's a "Wisconsinite?" Is that how the natives pronounce "cheesehead?"

(I was born and raised in Eau Claire, BTW...)

I'm a Minnesotan (engaged to a Wisconsinite), and I think I am just now starting to understand what I'm getting myself into next year.

*Sob*

Livercod, I didn't know you were from EC!! I'm from 45 minutes west - small town. Have a couple friends from EC. I love that town!!

Back on topic...I'm interviewing at MCW on the 4th (couldn't get anything earlier, and then couldn't try for grabbing cancellation spots cuz of work). Does anyone know if the class is "full," or will they still be sending out acceptances for that interview date?
