I just started an ICU rotation, my first ever and I'm looking for a good book or article that discusses the different types of ICU airway management.

I'm looking for a source that would answer issues such as the following: why switch to a fenestrated trach?, why choose cuffed trach over cuffless?, why in the weaning process would u go from SIMV with minimal settings to CPAP with pressure support instead of directly to a T-piece trial?

Sure I can find papers comparing a methods, but nothing out there that explains how each method works and the physics behind them. Maybe I just need a dumbed down book on ICU airway management. Any suggestions would be appreciated

These are things that your ICU attending is supposed to teach you during so called "teaching rounds"

marino's ICU book has this information. it's an easy, quick, clear read.

It's a great read, but our ICU director, who is one of the most respected physicians in the hospital, has serious issues with Marino (the book, not the person!). He never got into specifics, but he maintains that there are a lot of inaccuracies and it's out of date. Ideally the best place to get the most accurate info on the topics Marino covers (conveniently) is from UpToDate.

One of my SICU staff at my medical school said the exact same thing about Marino's book, but also failed to get into specific details. Of course, this guy was also against using the Sanford guide to antimicrobial therapy, so maybe he's just a crackpot.
