Hi,

What do you guys know about SIU?

How good of a school is it? How is its clinical program?

Are there any specialization programs that one can do there later on? Are they good?

Thanks.

I can give you a little info on SIU. I don't think they have a lot of specialty programs to offer. The clinical program seems to be pretty stable, and I think they have patients to support it. As far as how good the overall program is, I am not sure. The school has a 100% pass rate on boards and I have heard that is a big focus. The tuition is one of the most reasonable and the cost of living in the area is not high. Did you apply to SIU?

From what I know, SIU is a terrific school. I think it is a gem hiding in a small town that not too many people know about. They consistently finish very high on the boards. Apparently, the last five years, they have finished in the top 10 of all schools on Part 1. One year they finished second. This shows that they have a sound didactic portion of the school.

The prof I spoke with said that he would put their students against any others in the country. I don't know about this, but that is what he said.

Very affordable living expenses and one of the most affordable tuition and fees in the country.

I have heard that their clinical education is their strongest part of the curriculum. From the SIU grads that I know, they agree with this. They have nothing but praise for the school.

Don't quote me on this, but I do believe that they have an endodontics specialty program and they have some sort of implant post grad program. You will have to either call or check out their website.

All in all, it is a very good program, especially for the price. This is probably where I will be going. Hope I helped.

I agree with openwyde, SIU is a very good school. All of the dentist I know who are graduates are very competent clinically and do good work. They do have an Endo program (alongside SLU ??? not sure though), but they pride themselves on producing general practitioners. SIU was my second choice; had I decided wholeheartedly to shoot for gp, then I would have gone there. Not much in the area of research or post grad programs 🙁 Not sure if I would have liked living in the Alton area either, seems a bit ?underdeveloped??It wouldn?t be impossible to live in St. Louis if you didn?t mind the drive. .

Thanks guys 🙂

Yeh I really like SIU. I'm from Northern Illinois, so for an in state school, I'd want to get away from this area for once. I've been here all my life 😡

Can someone tell me about the grading system at SIU dental school? Is it Pass/Fail? Or is there a GPA?

thanks

ULTRON

I am a an IL resident.....I got waitlisted at SIU. Anyone else waitlisted? I was surprised because I did not think my scores matched up to what they were looking for, but since I am in-state I figured I had a much greater chance to get in because they take so many in-state people. I talked to an adcom there who said they had 500 applications total this year. I have heard the faculty is excellent and I have a friend in A/P with me who is going to UIC this year and keeps saying she wishes she got into SIU because she feels it is a better school. It is a matter of opinion but she visited there and the students at SIU seem to be a lot happier than UIC. Anyway, I guess in the end it doesnt matter where you go, hell, I would be more than happy to go to UIC. Anyone waitlisted???????

i plan on applying there when it's time for me to apply (2006). only done basic research on the place, but as stated earlier, seems like a diamond in the rough. i dont need a big city to distract me from my dental studies.

DoctorSaab,
I'm D1 at SIU. The school is really nice if you want to be the best gp as you can be. We start working on each other during the second 9wk of the D1, and starts doing prophys and sealant to young kids in the community during the second semester of D1., which is a great experience. Though, sometimes the faculty puts more pressure on you, to cut the best prep ever, or wax a perfect #30 or what ever , but overall I don't regret my decision on coming here. The clinical program is top notch from what we hear from the upper classmen, and getting patients is not a problem at all. The only specialist program we have are endo, and perio. By the way for the past five yrs, the school have had the #1 spot on the perio. on part two boards. Great school overall.

ULTRON,
For D1 and D2 the grading system is on the GPA scale. And is A,B, C and F, and mainly on the 90,80,70 scale.
