I was looking up Costochondritis in Epocrates and it stated that the intraarticular injections are usually done by specialists (e.g. rheumatologists).

Is it necessary or a good idea to have this done by them? Any reason a family doc can't or shouldn't give them?

I do all kinds of injections. The only thing that would limit you is your training and comfort level doing the procedure.
