Hi all,
I am currently a sophomore(by units) at UCSD. I am not applying to Med school for another 2 years, but would appreciate some input on what my chances and options are for allopathic and DO schools based on my situation.
My gpa is only 3.0, but will improve as i take more classes( I am only on my 3rd quarter of attendance ( more explained later), hopefully to a 3.5 by graduation.
I have yet to even look at the MCAT, but I believe I will do well (I am very good at physics and mathematics), i am aiming for a 32-40 score.
I am a bioengineering major.

Now on to explain why my GPA is low. When I first started college, on my 3rd week of attendance, I fell ill and was diagnosed with Aplastic Anemia (cause unknown). This caused me to withdraw from all 3 of my classes (3 Ws, how will this affect me?). I was hospitalized for around 3 months and continued to go to the hospital everyday. I was preped for a bone marrow transplant from my brother, but my bone marrow regraphed on its own with the help of Cyclosporine, so I managed to avoid the transplant. Currently, I am a lot healthier and getting closer to having normal blood counts.
When I started school again 2 quarters later, I got a 3.5 gpa, but got in over my head when I decided to take on a huge summer course load that was too much for me, so my gpa is now only a 3.0.
To further explain my situation, I come from a very low income family and am a first generation collegee. Through out high school I carried my own family on my back because my parents were very irresponsible. I worked part time (internship at a law firm) everyday while going to high school, even while taking on AP course work and having to drop off and pick up my little sister (4 years old from daycare everyday). My parents are currently in between getting a divorce and my mother and little sister are under government housing.

I feel extremely passionate about medicine and I believe I will become a good doctor if given the opportunity. Please advise me on how I can build up a strong application and what sort of MD and DO schools are within my grasp. Much appreciated.

If you can get your GPA to a 3.5, then both DO and MD med school admission is possible for you. Besides striving to get straight As in order to repair your low GPA, start some form of clinical volunteering, consider a research experience, and plan some leadership. Also good are teaching/mentoring and an expression of teamwork (?sports/music among others). You have a good reason for your low GPA, but that doean't excuse from the need to redeem it. I'm sure it will make a compelling story if you work it into your Personal Statement. Don't get distracted by the expected extracurriculars. Your first priority is your GPA. If you don't have time for the rest right now due to family responsibilities, get it done later, as there's no rule about an age requirement when you apply.
