Inquiring about professors accepting grad sctudents

Hi, I have been told that you should send emails or letters to potential PIs to inquire whether they are accepting grad students. Does anyone know what that email should look like? Know of any examples?

If you go from the main forum page to "search this forum" and put in "POI and letters" you'll get a bunch of hits that might be helpful.
