To all of the current ED physicians in this forum:

I am currently choosing programs to apply to for this years match. I am able to get a decent amount of information from websites, but is often difficult to really get a good feel for a program unless you rotate there or speak to a current resident. As rotating at every place I am to apply is impossible, I would appreciate if current residents could indicate in this forum where they are currently working and what they think of their programs. Please include strengths/weaknesses, education, exposure (trauma/medical), lifestyle, etc..
If you don't feel comfortable about expressing this information in a public forum for fear of public caning, please indicate if it is ok to send a private message via this forum.

Thanks in advance for your help!

It might help if you let us know a little about yourself and what kind of working environment you think you'd do best in. That way we can be a little more specific in our advice.

Can also try scutwork.com, where programs have been reviewed by rotating students and residents. Strengths and weaknesses are listed, as well as information on research, atmosphere etc.

Hey Margaritaboy,

I want to go into EM and would prefer a residency in a warm state (I'm originially from Florida, but have been freezing for the past three years in Philadelphia). How do you like Maricopa so far, how is Phoenix? Any info you have time to give I would really appreciate, thanks!

check emramatch.org thay have a great list of info on most programs. You will start to find out a lot of your information once you start interviewing and get out on the trail, although it will be a little late to send out more apps/invites at that time. but it will help you weed out some of the ones you have already been invited to. I had interviews set up at close to 19 programs and started ditching some based on feedback I got while on the road. Save some of the ones you aren;t too keen on for the end so that you can canel them, and you will, towads the end when you get tired and broke.

Emd05,

Thanks for asking. I?ve also lived in both Florida and Pennsylvania. Living out West is the shiznit. Residency here at The Copa has been excellent so far. Mostly, I've been impressed with the caliber teaching we receive both on and off our shifts from our attendings, who seem very involved and dedicated to the ED and residency. Our department is arguably the strongest and most stable at our hospital by consensus of both off service attendings and residents alike. Also, the second and third year residents in our program seem to be very well respected on different services, and are strong in terms of knowledge and management of trauma or medical patients. It is hard for me to imagine that I will walk among them in another 11 months. They say the learning curve is steep the first year....it must be a dead rise.

Residents seem pretty tight, with a relaxed relationship with attendings. They are teaming up to do an adventure race in October. Our first unofficial departmental party involved throwing all interns into a swimming pool.....along with all PGY2s, 3s, recent graduates, and attendings. Nobody was spared.

Phoenix is far better than even I had thought it would be. Sixth largest city in the US, so it has diverse activities / restaurants etc. Outdoor activities abound, with hiking and mountain biking being popular year round, and the added benefit of skiing in nearby Flagstaff in the winter. There's also a beach about 4 hrs away on the Gulf of California, but haven't seen it yet ....

I've only been here for about 8 weeks, so the honeymoon phase may ware off at some point. You can email me later in the year and get the updated opinion if you want.

I think you may sing a different tune after your OB month at "The Copa".

Definately need to give a little more info. Or look at where everyone is and direct comments to them if its in a location you want.

Some questions to think about:

Location!
1-3 vs 2-4 vs 1-4
Location!
Ultrasound
Do you want to do medicine floors?

I personally am in NYC and love my program.

I doubt 28 days of a single off service rotation will alter what I said above. 28 days...and no overnight call...and 4 days off.

Dude, I was manhandled way worse as a medical student with Q3 for two months and 2 days off. It sucked. There's not a lot that can be thrown at me in lieu of the 80hr rule that I can't suck up and spit out in a month.

I said it before, and I'll repeat it here: I'll be more than happy to give an update further into the year, for better or worse.

Thanks for the info Margaritaboy, appreciate it. 👍

I'm in Philly, happy with my program and willing to give info to any who wish it 😀

Am at Hennepin. Really enjoying, was a good fit. Can give info about program if any one wants.

p.s. It's not as cold as everyone thinks in Minnesota
