I am starting 2nd yr in a few weeks and I am wondering should I be out at my local hospitals with residency programs and doing volunteer work to get in with the residents and faculty of the program I want to attend?????

Thanks

Only if you feel a strong desire to do so....if not (which is probably why you asked this question) go out and enjoy your last summer vacation.
Travel, hike, write, ect. Explore your other areas of interest which will make you a great human being first and a understanding physician second (and also provide interesting feeder for interviews and personal statements).

Congrats on the first year.

I agree with Mounte.....

Don't feel you need to do this to get a step ahead of your fellow students. It is not necessary! If you want to just "get a feel" for the ED before your third year starts or you just have an afternoon to blow, go ahead... but don't think it will make a significant impact on "landing you a residency position." You will be spending more than enough time in the ED or the hospital of your choice during your third and fouth year... AND its important to know that as an observer, they aren't really even critiquing you or evaluating you as a potential applicant/resident... you are still a neonate in the eyes of the attendings and residents...

BUT..... if you just want to hang out just to pass the time or to just experience some of what goes on in the ED, it won't hurt. Just don't do it thinking it will land you your #1 choice.

Q, DO

Thanks guys. I have plenty of experience in the ER, Former Paramedic, so I guess I do some more reading and enjoy my time off.

Thanks again

Between now and your third year you should run...fast, from any hospital you see. You will have enough later. Trust me. No one will remember you in two years when you apply later anyway. Unless you cure cancer or something.

Isn't the inside tract the alimentary tract?
