I am curious how those of you who were accepted into mstp programs articulated why you wanted to go that route on your applications. I just talked to the director of an mstp program the other day, and he told me the biggest thing they consider is how well you understand that you want to do clinical research vs. a basic science lab.

So I am curious how you all, as undergrads, were able to talk about that in your essays without ever having any type of experience in clinical/translational research, as well as what type of questions you came across in interviews that adressed this.

Which program is this individual the Director of?

Just make a case for the fact that you plan practice medicine and do basic research. By interview three, you'll figure it out.
