I was hoping the community here could post some inspirational quotes and stuff that helped them when dental school got them down. I'm a second year now and things are starting to get hectic (and I know it's going to get worse). I'm trying to stay positive about all of the hoops we are jumping through, but sometimes it's hard. Just two more semesters and my life will be mine again. So anything you guys have about perseverance or positive attitudes would be greatly appreciated.

Well just remember that in 3 years; you won't have to take crap from anybody if you don't want to.

Remember that after you graduate you wont have to go to school for your remaining 60 years or so.

Persistence
by Calvin Coolidge

Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence.
Talent will not;
Nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.
Genius will not;
Unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education will not;
The world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.
The slogan 'Press On' has solved
And always will solve the problems of the human race.

How about continuing education? Doesn't law require that you take a minimum hours a year? I think you have to keep going to school as a dentist.

This came to mind:

But you NEVER stop learning!!

In the 15 years since I've graduated dental school we've gone through 3 or 4 generations of bonding agents, countless advances in the particle size of composites, basically the entire rotary endo file genesis, implants being from more of an occasional thing to being very common, lasers for multiple uses, etc, etc, etc.

I'm taking more and more CE courses every year because I want to, and finding more and more that I'm really excited about not just with what materials and capabilites I've had to learn since d-school for practice in "today's" dental world, but also some of the concepts that I may very well be practicing with 15 years from now.

Most dentist's find that they never stop going to school or learning. And those that think that they know enough so that they don't ever have to go back to school tend to be the ones who in actuality know very little

Depends on the state that you practice in.

I believe that most, not quite sure if it's all, do have a minimum amount of hours of CE that you need to take and self document to over the course of each license renewal cycle.

For instance in CT where I practice. We need to be able to show, if the state regulatory agencies come to check (and they almost never do), that i've taken 25 hrs of CE over the prior 2 years, 5 hours of which are in pre defined topics (infection control, special needs patient care, malpractice, etc) and the other 20 at one's own discretion). But that's just CT. Each state's own Public Health Department determines what it's own criteria is for license renewal and CE

Dr. Jeff,
From what I've noticed, you seem like the type of person that's extremely in control of all their finances, budgets every month, and manages all of their time. I hope you consider this a compliment. Has a career in dentistry lived up to your expectations?

Interesting that this quote comes from Calvin Coolidge, who extant historians consider an awfully lazy president. Coolidge often let the country run on auto-drive following Warren G. Harding's death and had little knowledge of what was going on around him as a result.

I'd say so looking back at the 15 years since they handed me my diploma.

It certainly hasn't gone exactly as my "idealistic" plan/idea I had from the day that I 1st decided that I wanted to become a dentist (I practice in a totally different setting and state than I imagined that I would), but I can easily say that it's lived upto, if not exceeded my expectations in so many ways.

Bottomline as I look at it, I enjoy coming to work every day and look forward to the daily technical, intellectual, managerial challenges that dentistry brings. Since even though one may on paper be doing the same procedure over and over, it most certainly isn't the same every time, and that's what I really enjoy about it. There's always something new that your learning, and for me that is very rewardding on so many levels!
