So here's the quick version: I took an incomplete in an independent study so that I could collect more data over the summer. This was something my advisor and I agreed upon. However, I was placed on academic warning that summer because with the incomplete my record showed I wasnt meeting my school's requirements to graduate. The reason for this was because in an earlier semester I only completed 3 classes (i dropped a course because of a complicated situation involving a sick friend). The warning appears on my transcript but only for that summer. I returned to good academic standing as soon as I turned in my final project. My question is...do I need to address the 3 class semester in the explanation for Institutional Action on my primary AMCAS? Or is that something I can address in the secondary? I just worry that I dont have enough room to explain the extenuating circumstances...and also the 3 course semester was 2 semesters prior to my receiving the warning. What do you think?

Did I post this in the wrong place? I want to make sure people see it!

No, it's in the right place. I'd say that if the 3 class semester played a role in your IA, then you definitely need to address it on your primary. Your description does not need to be all flowerly and wordy. Make it concise and to the point.

well, mention it in the disciplinary actions, and then explain the situation.. don't just mention it w/o explaining it... But, I doubt that it would hurt ur app much..

I agree. You must report it; you should provide the facts and state how you changed. Being on academic probation shouldn't hurt your application, particularly if it was not related to bad grades.

In ___ semester of ___ year, I dropped a class due to my responsibilites toward a sick friend and thus carried only 3 courses. In ___ semester of ___ year, I took an incomplete on an independent study in order to collect more data over the summer. The combination of the light load and the incomplete caused me to be placed on academic probation. I completed the independent study that summer and the academic probation was lifted.
