just thinking about my options at this point...

any thoughts on the competitiveness of these programs? Wondering about step-1 scores, as well as research (perhaps I should take a research year between ms3 and ms4?)

I don't think a research year will do much for your application. The only reason to take time off during medschool should be to earn another degree. A year of research probably won't add up to much for publications, unless you jump into a group that is cranking out projects and they hand you a beauty. That would be nice, but people will recognize it as such.
