Yup, it's been announced. Before quad cores were even becoming a standard, Intel is already pushing for the next thing.

I honestly still can't come up with a use for more than 3 cores on a consumer system...

Servers can use them. Servers always need more CPU power. Not everything is about you, the little consumer, ya know. 😛
