In the past few months I have become exceedingly interested in anesthesiology as a profession to pursue.

I have had academic problems in school that I have overcome. I started out my first year making mostly C's and a B. Then my second year I made 2 D's in pharm and path and had to repeat the year. The 2nd time around, I managed to make an A in every single course.

I've been studying consistently for the boards since the beginning of April. I plan to take them at the end of June.

Hopefully, I will score above a 230. With that, and doing well in my 3rd year rotations, do you think programs will overlook my poor academic performance?

If you get over 230 and do well (some honors) during 3rd year, you'll be in good shape to go just about anywhere. A good boards score shows you might not have performed well during 1st and 2nd year, but you know the material.

just a question, sorry for being an a$$, but if you couldn't really pass the courses in med school the first time around, what makes you think you'll be able to score a 230+? I hope you are looking objectively at yourself and your capabilities, b/c there are soo many people out there who think they're going to do well/did well on test day and then are SHOCKED when they come home with a sub-score. This is not about criticizing you, but to examine yourself and to look yourself face forward. Just out of curiosity, u a US allo student or a DO/FMG? that may also put you in a different situation.....but when all is said is done, i'm pretty confident that your pre-clinical work counts for not much more than a$$wipe!!

We all experience life's pitfalls at some point which affects our performance.

Winner's are able to pull back on the yoke with all their might, avoid the ground, and point the nose at the stars.

Going from substandard performance to all As is truly bad a s s.

Congratulations, and keep up your stellar efforts.

There is a spot out there for you if you keep up the good work.

Ditto to JPP's comments. You will judged on how well you recover from adversity my friend....think comeback champ!
I will tell you from experience (current CA2 and used to be on selection commitee) that if you keep up the good work and score 230 or greater on the steps you will VERY Easily find a spot in Gas even with the recent intense competitiveness. Good Luck and stay positive

study like crazy for that USMLE. seems like programs really focus on this if your score is high. and, it would really show that you did indeed learn your shiznit.

It is possible to come back from a poor performance your first two years. I ended up repeating my first year and came back with mostly HP's and H's and a 258 on my step one. I hope to start applying to anesthesiology programs this fall. So good luck to you and me in our future in anesthesia.

Thanks! I ended up focusing on what I was doing wrong, avoided doing that, and got intense about school. I stopped looking at it as a chore and looked at it like challenge. I also got over my test anxiety.

Sabdo, any advice on how u got that 258?
