I'm quite ignorant on this topic, so forgive me..

I have an interest in going into primary care. I'll be paying for school out of pocket and won't have huge loans hanging over me. As such, compensation is less of an issue in terms of choosing my future residency. As I'm filling out my apps, should I avoid telling schools this?

It's true primary care is where my passion is, but I'm worried schools would be more apt to accept students who are shooting for more competitive specialties that will improve their match list, prestige, etc. (this is just a guess of mine).

In short, will talking about my passion for primary care come back to bite me?

No. Many(most?) schools are very interested in someone who demonstrates a strong desire for primary care. There is a huge shortage of PCPs, if you weren't aware.

No, and if you have evidence to back it up, based upon your ECs, so much the better.

The opposite is true.

What about top 20 research focused institutions? Do they hold the same positive view for people interested in Primary Care? If so, would it also be advisable for people to mention their interest in primary care when interviewing at these schools?

Thanks Goro. I've got a fair number of EC's that involve working with underserved communities and/or preventative medicine. My ehealth business is built on the idea of prevention, so hopefully that helps show my true desires!

All of us are failing our constituents by inadequate provision of graduates who are willing to do this work. The only difference in "top 20" schools is the desire to produce leaders in these fields!

Disingenuous proclamations without validation of commitment will help no application, though.

Is this true? It was my understanding Top 20 schools were focused on producing academics and I'll admit I'm ignorant but how academic is primary care?

There is enormous academic interest and publication/grant potential in primary care fields!
