Since this is my first post and the first day I registered I just want to say that this is a serious post and I am in no way trolling...

Anyways...

I'm a 2nd year at an Osteopathic school (which won't be named), and I've had kind of an interesting situation. In the spring of my first year I failed neuroanatomy (no excuses, I just didn't get it done), and during the summer I remediated it successfully (I did very well) and just fell in love with the subject.

So, what I'm wondering is... Will failing that class keep me from having a realistic chance at matching into and Osteopathic Neurosurg residency?

Also, if anyone has any suggestions on things I could do to make myself a competitive applicant (no necessarily just for neuro, I'm still very open on towards specialities) that would be very much apperciated.

Thanks.

I don't think anyone can tell you for sure, everyone is different and there are so many variables as to whether you match....on a given year

If you love it, do well on boards, make inroads with surgeons, do research.... yada yada

That's basically what I've been hearing but I was just wanting to make sure that it wasn't going to be a deal breaker.

So, I posted this about a year ago and probably shouldn't be bumping it... but anyway, I thought I'd update it a bit.

Soooooo... 2nd year went well. I didn't rock it but I didn't have any problems either. Comlex went the same (510) but unfortunately wasn't as high as I had hoped. But on a great side note I've been absolutely rocking my clinical rotations and I've been getting some awesome evaluations.

Now my question is... with my very average board score and the red flag of a failed class on my record do you guys think it'd be worth my time to do a NS rotation or two as a forth year and apply or should I just stick with gunning for a general surgery spot?

I'm just an MS2, but if I were you, I would shoot for the stars, but have a few backup plans. 🙂 apply broadly both NS and GS. In 15 years, you don't want to look back and say, "man... I wish I had at least tried and seen what would have happened..."
