👍 Hi all, just a quick question regarding a certain class. During my freshman year (i am now a sophmore) i was completely unmotivated. I ended up getting a C in elementary calc 1 and elementary calc 2 (the one w/o proofs and stuff). Both are 3 credit courses.

During the summer, my parents urged me to be a science major ( i was a business major considering pre-med). So i took the engineering calc 1 at a community college and really busted by butt and pulled an A (4 credit course). Along comes fall semester and I wanted to raise my GPA at my college, and the calculus class I took over the summer would not replace my old grade. My (business)advisors suggestion was "if you want to raise ur GPA, retake elementary calc 1 again." So I ended up taking this elementary calc again, and got an A. I have since switched my major to microbio.

Now it seems like I have 3 semesters of calc 1, although only 2 are the same. THe other one is much more detailed (proofs and such).

How will this look on my pharmacy application? My current gpa at my university is 3.38, but GPA including community college classes is a 3.48. Will they look down on my calculus fiasco? Im worried I may look like an idiot for retaking elementary calc 1 after already taking engineering/science calc 1. I feel like an idiot, but I dont want the adcoms to know that 😉. Anyone have ideas?

Thanks👍

I'm sure the adcoms are very well aware of all the hoops we jump through to look good. I'm sure they'll see the retaking of Elem Calc exactly as you stated, just a means to raise GPA. It also shows that you have the concept very well handled. I doubt that could be seen as a bad thing.

Taking what seems to be one class 3 times isnt a bad thing? I mean, thats 2 of my As right there...i guess. But i guess it does prove i know the material.😀

dont sweat it. people retake classes a bunch of times. I retook like 3 separate classes from C-s to Bs. instead of taking a hard physics, i took easier ones that was completely different. did they look down at me , heck no! adcom arent gonna be soo nitpicky about something like that. they really focus on your sciences than your math. so your gpa looks pretty good from here. just keep it up and dont slack off. then i think you will be fine.

I would check out whether this "elementary calc 1" will be accepted by the schools you are interested in attending. I know that typically, Business Calc is not accepted in place of Calculus and Analytic Geometry 1 and I wouldn't want to see you get into a problem latter regarding this issue. I have a friend who was told to take, "Calculus for the Healthcare Professional" and that it would fulfill the "Calculus and Analytic Geometry 1" requirement at the schools she was interested in. However, she later found out, the course was not acceptable as a replacement to Calculus and Analytic Geometry 1. I don't mean to freak you out, I would just check to make sure.

Good luck.

We dont have a "calculus and analytic geometry"offered in my school. Just elementary calculus and then Calculus for scientist and engineers. I've taken both, so I should be fine I hope.

If the school requires precalc, will I need to take that as well? Or will I be fine with just taking calc 1/2?

Calculus for scientists and engineers should be the class to take.

well I guess im ok since I've taken both... but the fact that I've taken both and retaken one, wont look "weird" to adcoms?
