I am working as hospitalist in the academic center for more than 10 years. But we got new management and new chief of the hospitalist group who is pretty arrogant and telling everyone « how smart Bangladeshi people are »… « Bangladeshi people are smartest people in the world » 😂😂😂 I noticed few times he was pushing his opinions without actual deep knowledge of the topic. Recently he started to interfere in my treatment plan with just one goal, to discharge people as soon as possible and show his superiority. Is it ok to interfere in my plan of the treatment under my license ? What should I do if I disagree with him?

Transfer the patient to his service and call it a day. </end snark>

But really, you don’t have to place orders at his direction if you are the attending of record. If he has a license then he should be doing things under his liability, correct? And if he doesn’t have a license or privileges then he has actually has no say in the clinical decisions.

Do what’s right for the patient. If you are an outlier in the hospitalist group in length of stay, then be engaged in what drives the difference. It might be you and your decisions / discharge comfort; it might be you have continual bad luck with trainwreck patients on your service.

Easy option is to quit and find another job--this isn't something that is going to get better and reflects culture of your admin.

Harder option: Start documenting these interactions as much as possible, especially the racial aspect. Get it in writing if possible. Once you have a solid body of evidence including citing this situation in writing file a complaint with HR. If this is a big academic hospital he will either immediately stop or be fired.

+1 on finding another job. That’s probably the only real way to solve this problem.

-1 on interacting with HR. They’re there to defend the company, not you. And complaining to HR can easily backfire (seen it happen to others, and have experienced it myself). At best, don’t expect HR to do anything. At worst, they may start messing with you.

I you document clear racism in writing and they fire you that is a lotto ticket worth more than your medical degree.
