Hi everyone,

For those that use Interfolio, I'm looking at a letter I received, and the "writer info" section says "letter has not been signed by writer."

Is this because it was uploaded? It is a confidential letter so I can't see anything. Does anybody else have this too?

Thanks!

Could it be that the letter has not been signed by the writer? Just send a friendly email to your prof and let him know that he may have neglected to sign the letter and ask for it to be sent again.

Oh yeah he definitely didn't sign it, but I'm wondering if that's necessary.

He uploaded it directly from his account with his school email, so is it necessary that he create a digital signature? I looked at the page for people to upload documents, and the website says the step is optional.

I wanted to make sure that this is okay for med school recommendation letters.

He could use a pen and sign it, then scan and upload it.

Yes, but before I bug the professor about this, I want to make sure it's absolutely necessary to have LOR's signed electronically when it's uploaded onto Interfolio.

Did anybody else have this? Did schools mind?

I used Interfolio last year but the paper/snail mail version, so all LORs were hand signed. First off, if you sent an unsigned letter, it's pretty much garbage. I haven't heard of digital signatures for LORs, even if Interfolio offers it, ask the schools (u're interested in) IF they will accept e-signatures.

The most sensible/prudent thing to do is to let the Prof know that the letter was unsigned and u'll appreciate it if he/she can print & sign another copy of the LOR. Give him/her a preaddressed/prestamped envelope so he/she can send it afterwards. This may be easier that the whole scanning, uploading routine.

I presume u'll be applying this yr so u have plenty of time to fix this and avoid delays from rejected LORs down the road.

Yes some schools will definitely mind. I know from first hand experience. And even if a school will accept a letter unsigned, it still just looks bad. Contact your professor. Let him know the LOR needs a signature. It's a perfectly reasonable request.
