So I'll be starting my PGY-1 year in Peds in July, and my program's chief has asked all of us new interns to provide our scheduling preferences, e.g. do we want to do NICU in a certain month, etc. It's nice to have some input into the coming year's schedule...except I really have no clue what rotation would be best to do when! Our rotations are pretty standard for first year: month of NICU, block of PICU, 3-4 months of floor, two 2-week blocks of night float, 2 weeks of procedures (IV starting, intubation, etc.) and the rest a collection of outpatient experiences. Does anyone have any advice/words of wisdom about what I should think about when making my schedule requests? -Thanks for your help!

The only thing that matters is scheduling around events that are important to you. If you are planning a vacation, obviously plan around that. If you have a big event like wedding or graduation or something, maybe schedule a month where you have minimal call or no weekends or something like that.

In my program, we do two months of nicu intern year and no picu until second year. I think this is a good way to do it, so if you have to do PICU first year, consider trying to do it later in the year.

Otherwise, I really dont your specific schedule order matters too much, as long as you are able to do the things outside the hospital that are important to you.
