I have known since college that I wanted to do Internal Medicine. In med school, I used to think I wanted to do ID. But I am not so sure any more.
After being exposed to IM in my M3 year, I am much more interested in being general IM. I am trying to weigh the various career options, but my school doesn't give much help on this. I am thinking Hospitalist.
Basically, these are some things I'd need in my career. Any advice from practicing attendings or residents is appreciated.
1.) Lifestyle- Basically, I want time to myself, and to start a family, and be comfortable financially.
2.) Hospital work- I love being in a hospital. I love taking care of really sick patients.
3.) Teaching- I REALLY want to teach. Medical students as well as residents.
4.) Research- I'm not too keen on doing bench research. If I write up a few cases for academic journals, then GREAT.
5.) Moonlighting- Would a hospitalist be able to pick up ICU shifts?
