Hi guys,

would someone who has gone through intern year or is in it right now mind breaking down a typical week (call and all) and your responsibilities? How many patients you are expected to see, etc...I tried to look for a similar thread, but all I found was people saying how much they hate intern year. I really like internal medicine and want to see what the residency schedule is like.

Love,

It's going to be a little different depending on your program, and on what particular month you're rotating on, some, depending on institution, staff, number of residents/fellows are busier than others.

Thanks. Do you know how many days you typically work?

You get one day off in 7, averaged over the whole 28 days. Some places these days off get scheduled as it works for the team. Where I train we like to arrange golden weekends if at all possible. So sometimes you'll work two week straight, BUT you get those two golden weekends off per month.

Golden Weekend = both Saturday and Sunday off

Other than those days off and vacations, I'm working. The daily hours is variable. As an intern on a general medicine ward month, you'll probably get to work around 6-6:30 and leave around 5-6 PM every day you work. But like I said it's very, variable.

Great. Thank you! It's not as bad as I was thinking. What is the nightfloat and call system during the intern year? Last question I promise.

I think a lot of the typical schedules will change with the new hour regulations.
