Why do we want a voltmeter with a larger internal resistance, but an ammeter with a smaller internal resistance?
 
If you touch two points, the best way to preserve everything the way it was(to get an accurate reading) is to not conduct. If you are being conducted through(one point), the best way to preserve the status quo is to have minimal resistance(and thus high current).
