Greetings everyone,

This is my very first post here on SDN. I was extremely motivated after reading a couple of Non-Traditional success stories.

As you might have already noticed, im an international applicant and i kind of require your help to improve my chances for the 2012 cycle. I've received my BS in Biology in June 2010 with a sci GPA of 3.11 and an overall of 3.11 from an overseas american institute, so my chances to get into a dental school in the US is kind of very low.
I went through rough times during my BS and hell laod of personal problems, and i thank God that i graduated with a 3.11 and not lower. After my graduation, i took several monthes thinking about who i want to become later. What inspired me to persue this career is having 2 sisters being dentists. I shadowed them alot and assissted them after i graduated.
Around the start of October, i finally realised that i myself should become a dentist, but i couldn't follow the path my sisters did because they are graduates from French schools.

I applied around 6 monthes late hoping that i still had a small chance of being accepted. I travelled to the States and sat for my DAT exam the second day of my arrival(with all the jet lag and after a 12 hour flight) and scored a 18AA 21PAT 21ORG 19CHEM 16RC 18QR 17BIO. I expected that i wouldnt score more than a 15 on the english section since it wasn't my native language and i suck at it 😛, but i was kind of surpirsed by the 17 on the bio, i never took taxonomy classes.

So after the worst part was over, i waited and waited. I received rejections on weekly basis. I reached a pt were i thought this career was never meant for me, and i thought that i should just go for my PHD and work in academia for the rest of my life. So, i applied to a 1year master's program at the University of Leeds, England and i got accepted starting next september.

My question for you guys is, i know deep down inside that i don't want to give up on dentistry, i got really annoyed by all the rejections, but now thinking about it again, i'm willing to sacrifice what ever it would take to get there someday. Do you guys think that this 1 year master program(6month of research) would increase my chances? even though if its in the UK and not in the US? I'm already late to apply to post-bac programs in the US for next year, and i just wanna do something productive. Do you think the grades i would earn on the module would effect my gpa? even if its another system?

Please, my fellow SDN members, i need your advice. I'm only 21 of age and im ready to sacrifice anything.

bump

could really use any piece of advice 🙁

International applicants with stellar stats usually struggle to get in. The competition for you guys is on a whole new level. And when I say stellar, I mean GPAs well above 3.6 and huge DATs (22+)

Are you a USA citizen? If so, are you able to move into the U.S and do your education here? I think getting into the more difficult U.S smp masters would be your next best option. I say this because Post-bacc is probably out of the question (you've done too many undergrad bio courses, right?)

Too bad im not a US citizen, although i have a visa for the next 5 years.

Regarding my undergrad biology courses, i've done a heck load of them. So you think the next best option is sit for my GRE's and apply for a masters program for 2012 entry?

I dunno if GRE is needed. I heard many SMPs will accept DAT
