Hi everyone!

I just thought of a weird but possibly real situation that I might face in the future. Ok, let's say I finish my OMFS training and I decide to move to a different country. Which of the following countries will allow me to practice as an oral surgeon without having to repeat all or a portion of their training?
- United Kingdom
- Germany
- Switzerland
- Italy
- Australia
- Canada
----
Other version of question, how about teaching institutions in those countries, can you be an attending (if they can't give you a license for practicing without repeating oral surgery residency over there?)
----
Are there opportunities in US military bases abroad as an OMFS? Would it be an option perhaps to contract work there?

Thanks a lot!

UK: all OMFS are double degree, you will have to take a lot of exams (dental exams to get equivalence, then medical exams to get equivalence for MD) I think its doable, but do you really want to work in UK?

Germany: probably similar to UK. Two kinds of OMFS: single degree-narrow scope, double degree -- very very large scope. Speaking German would be a good thing too... Unless you work in those US military bases.

Switzerland: then again you'd have to redo exams, and there are probably some nationality requirements

Italy: I think that there OMFS is now medically based specialty (MD only)

Australia: quite doable - (but Australia doesnt recognize US dental degrees, you have to pass at least two big exams like any international (one for dentistry and one for OMFS (FRACDS))

Canada: the easiest, will accept both your diplomas (DMD-DDS and OMFS) but you still have to pass two exams : Canada wide dental board to practice dentistry and Canadian Specialty Board for OMFS (RCDC)

for academia or short posts if you are in teaching, it can certainly be easier and some of these examination requirements will be waived

I don't think you can practice in any of these countries without having to sit through at least an exam or two, but you probably won't have to redo your entire recidency training.

That being said, European double-degree OMSs, especially in Germany, Switzerland and the UK, generally have more extended scope of practice compared to most OMSs in the US. They do a lot of facial plastic surgery and oncology, neck disections, mircovascular stuff, salivary gland surgery and even thyroid surgery some places. They might want you to train for at least some time before being granted full specialist status, assuming you're and MD as well.

If you're not, you might as well get a job at a private clinic, pulling 3rds and placing implants, because in Europe (except for Scandinavia), you're not going to be doing any major stuff without an MD.

UK: If 1-3 of your attendings in the US is registered as an OMFS in the UK currently. (ex. Pogrel or Ord) Then they can "sponsor" you to also write the FRCS (OMFS) exam in the UK.
