I'm a non-trad student, with only about 15 credits of tertiary school. I am looking at international schools with a 5 year program that is available to people without a B.S first. Has anyone done this? I'm 29, and would love the opportunity to finish vet school before I turn 40! 😎

I also would be bringing my dog (med sized, no banned breeds), and would need to go to an English speaking school/country.

So far RVC, Glasgow, Massey, Murdoch and Melbourne seem to have the kind of entry programs I am looking for.

Would love advise from those who have been there, done that!

I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with the term "tertiary school." Is that like undergraduate? (Ie, primary is elementary, secondary is high school, college is tertiary?)

Haven't you posted about this before?

My advice at this point would be to look for discussion boards like this from Australia and the UK in order to get an idea about the programs and to hear from people doing them. The Student Room is a good place to start for UK schools. I found it helped a lot to get a feel for the international schools. As for the dog thing, airlines post prices and if you look on the DEFRA website under the Pet Travel Scheme (for the UK), that will give you all the information you need.

Good luck! Hope everything works out for you.

Yes, tertiary school is undergrad, but that can be misleading at the international schools consider their vet programs undergrad as well. So I was trying to be clearer...guess that didn't work.

And yes, I did post about this before, but am more hoping to find people who went to vet school directly out of high school. The websites are saying that it is possible to do that with sufficient AP courses, but I'd like to know if anyone actually got in with just a high school transcript.

Massey allows you to do the pre-selection semester with only high school as background. That said, I don't think many (any?) people have actually succeeded getting into Massey's professional program with only high school courses prior to coming to Massey. This may have changed in the past 4 years, but everyone who got in the year I got in had a prior university degree.

This isn't to say *you* wouldn't successfully complete the pre-selection semester and get in, but the odds are not in your favor, and I think that's important to know coming in.

We have students at Univ of Edinburgh without an undergrad degree from N. America. They typically have taken some college courses, however. I am not aware of specific pre-req's for the 5 yrs. BVM&S here

Major issue for what you are seeking to do is that without a degree (or the equivalent number of credits/classes to a foreign BS degree) you likely will not qualify for graduate level loans (stafford and grad plus) and will only be able to take out undergrad loans + private loans (likely needing a co-signer) -- this is at least the case at Murdoch.

Just something to think about 😉

Very interesting about the loans. Even with the school calling it an undergrad degree? Wouldn't it just be a transfer to a different school? Even with them being AVMA approved? I could get a co-signer, but I'd rather not. Is it just the amount that changes with undergrad vs grad loans? I'm independent, and with no job (once school starts, I currently have a job), I'm hoping to get as much as I can for living expenses. My parents would help me out if I really needed it, but I hate to ask them for that.
