Hello Everyone,

I have been looking around lately at going on some type of service learning trip. Does anyone have any feedback on how beneficial they really? The only company I could find that offers them are the international service learning. Does anyone know/ or gone on one of the trips they offer. Any feedback would be awesome!

I went on a trip with ISL 3 years ago. It lasted 2 weeks and the cost was about $2000 for everything. You won't get to learn much of actual dentistry in those 2 weeks, but you do get an opportunity to serve the poor communities of rural Central America. I got to experience a new culture and brush up on my Spanish 🙂 It is definitely a rewarding experience, and certainly looks good on your resume. It helped me the most when I was able to talk about the trip and what I learned from it during my interviews. I would definitely recommend it.

A guy in my predental society was telling me about it the other day and he said when he went that it was him and like 10 UPenn dental students, so I guess instead of casting him out for not having as much experience, they trained him to do cleanings and that's what he did most of the trip; he even said he was able to extract a tooth the last day he was there. But he said it was fun and a good experience, plus you have some time to do local sightseeing wherever you go...I would love to go but I'm applying this summer and I can't seem to find a trip that will fit in with everything :/
