Hello all,
I am new to SDN (first post) and I want to congratulate everyone that got accepted this year. Congrats class of 2015 or 2014 (UoP)!!!

I am an international student (F-1 visa) interested in Dental school. I would like to know what the acceptance rate for the schools are. I called Univ. of Maryland and Howard University for information, but they were vague. They both accept international students, but I am not sure if the acceptance rate is high. I want to know if I have a chance. I don't want to be wasting my time and money. I hope you understand!

I have a decent uGPA (3.66), graduate GPA (3.8) (Biochemistry and Biology, respectively) and I have a lot of volunteering experience in the health profession (200+ hrs), but I did not take the DATs yet. I am doing a lot of practice now and I think realistically I can get a 19 AA.

I bought the Kaplan blue book and cliff's DAT. I am also in the process of buying the CRACK DAT. Would that do it?

I am looking forward to your responses
Thanks

There is a really small percent of international students applying to dental schools compare to citizens so of course the schools may not have specific number or exact ratio for you.

Because you are already graduated with that high GPA, I think you have really good chances for most private dental schools. The things is state university usually consider their state residents first and then out-of -state, then international students.
Private dental schools don't care about your nationality but your commission toward dental career. I wonder if your 200+ hours are related to dental field or not.

If you search for "international chance" on SDN, you will see how many international students are accepted to dental schools.

But if you have high GPA (>3.5) and high DAT (>20 for most sections), you should not be hesitated applying for several STATE UNIVERSITY because you will compete with other international students. State universities still open spots for them because of diverse student body.

REMEMBER:
Great recommendation letters also play important role.

DAT Materials: Practice is the key to success

Kaplan
Topscore
Crack DAT PAT
Destroyer DAT
...
search on SDN

By the way, I am an international student (pre-dental).
I get all of this information from many international students on this forum.

Heaven forbid! Accept it only if served on a silver plate.

I agree with bday! Private schools don't care of your status. NYU is one of the dental schools you should apply. I was interviewed in November and all of us are international/out-of-state students. Their class size is big too so you have a very high chance of getting in. Don't forget to try TOPSCORE, it helps me tremendously. Good luck

Bday, thank you for your response. I will be posting more questions in the near future, but I think this is a good start.
Are you in Dental school right now, if not, where are you applying? And if you do not mind me asking, where did you complete your undergraduate studies? Does it make a difference where you complete your studies?
Thanks

Doc toothache,
Your information is extremely valuable and priceless. It seems UCSF, NY, and Boston will be my top choices. I am in MD school right now and I have a lot of friends that go to Univ. of MD and I am a patient to the dental clinic. I really like the facilities, but it seems that it is going to be extremely tough to get in. They only accepted 3 international students last year and they were all Canadians...

But I am really excited that I actually have a chance... Thanks

In your PS and rec letters, emphasis on your international background, which will draw admission comittee attention and give you a chance to express your difficulties you encountered in studying in us!

Hey Khal...I am international, I interviewed at UMDNJ (State school) - and was accepted on Dec 1, am still waiting on NYU but hopefully it will be positive as well. There's def a chance, but it all comes down to how hard you are going to work for it. Try to get at least a 20AA and 20 TS to be competitive. Your GPA looks fine and in addition you have a graduate degree --- Good work. You should apply...make sure to apply to NYU, BU, Tufts and some state schools. You never know where you will be invited.

I'm just a pre-dental student (bio major). I'm sorry. I haven't not experienced application process but I will share some others experiences because I spent a lot of time on this forum and ask other students who got accepted to dental school at my university.

As long as your prerequisites are not completed in community college, you should be fine (several credits will not hurt though).
The prestige of your university will not matter that much if you have a high GPA & DAT. Because ADCOM will compare your scores with others, and then personal statement w/ recommendation letters, then EC/volunteer hours, then .......prestige of university. Again, it is not 100% sure.

I am studying at a private university in Oregon. It is in Tier 1 US ranking (100s). I want to go here because I get scholarship which looks good on application, not because of its prestige. If state uni offered in-state tuition for international student, I would definitely go there.

TIPS for financial aids (scholarships & grants):
Sorry. None for F-1 visas , even US citizens because dentist have really high average income in America.

Live cheap as a students until graduate dental school.

If you get in dental school next cycle, would you like to contact me by SDN private mail?
Thanks first.

Sexychic, I will take that into consideration, but do you know if this will assurely be an advantage for me?

Are you an international student? Did you apply to dental schools this cycle?

Bday,
I am at a state school in MD (Scholarship). I actually finished a lot of prerequisites in a CC, but I did fine in the University I am also doing well in grad. school, so I am not sure if my classes in CC would put me in a disadvantage. I hope not.

Do you think it is a good idea to get loans form the home country, because it is really tough to get loans from the states?
Thanks
Khal87

Khal,

defi emphasize ur internationalness...

get loans from home unless you know cosigners here

and apply to Upenn, pitts and nova

If you can find a co-signer in here to help you, that is awesome. But you should compare the interest between private bank (US) and your home country's bank before making any decision.

I was born and raised in another country ad moved here 4 yrs ago my current status is permanent resident however I included this in my ps and had 4 schools interviewed all and each of them showed great interest about my transition and foreign culture . I believe private founded schools don't have any agenda and yet their sole purpose is to educate people regardless of their background as long as they are qualified. Be consistent with your gap and dat you will get in. Let me know if you have any other question

Thank you very much for your information.

Would you like to share your statistic with us?
What average GPA & DAT do you think we as international students should at least have?
Do you have any dental experience before applying to dental school?

This is good to know. I have a lot of friends (international students) that are having trouble getting into med. schools with decent MCATS, but I am a little relieved to learn that Dental schools are a little more understanding. So, as long as I get 19-20 in the DATs, I should be good to go 🙂

Good luck @ NOVA

I will def. look into all that when I get in. 😀 thanks for the information. First, I want to ACE the DATs. 🙂

Trying to get this thread going...

International student from a evil country. I am applying this cycle. Keep my finger crossed! hope I can get in.

Bump... Just have a question. Say that you just have a tourist Visa (B-1 or B-2) I believe.. Can you still apply to dental schools? I went to undergraduate school here in US for 3 years now.. Have a social security number/driving license and work permit.. I am still considered an international student right? Please help!

How did you go to school with a tourist visa, but not F-1 visa? If you don't have permanent residency, you are still an international. Having EAD card doesn't help you.
