Hello, I am new on this board and have read through past threads on the topic of internship. I am starting to look into the internship process and will be applying in the 2012-2013 cycle. Being aware of the "internship crisis" and the difficulties people are experiencing obtaining an internship I am a tend bit anxious starting the process. I am hoping to match at a college counseling center and would appreciate any advice, support, guidance, etc. on how I should navigate this process and also how people have managed their anxiety throughout applications, interviews, and the waiting game.

All this advice is readily available by reading through the other threads on the internship process, especially last years 70 page internship thread.

Its a little early to kick off the internship thread for this year (I think they usually start it up in August), but maybe the mods will designate this the official thread for this years internship cycle

This thread gets posted earlier and earlier each year.

The best advice I've heard about counseling sites (from friends) is to have prior experience at a counseling site. They also said that having experience with more severe pathology was welcomed because you will see some if you work at a counseling center. Also, make sure to ask about call/coverage because they all had to carry a beeper and/or be available to cover certain evenings and weekends.

I feel you, psyunknown. I will be going through the internship application process this year as well and definitely have some anxieties and concerns about matching. I have started reviewing information about potential sites and pulling together my CV with an emphasis on clinical experiences. I hope to start working on my essays sometime this summer. My highest priority for the summer is to complete my dissertation proposal, but it's a lot more fun to play around with the APPIC directory and program websites!

I'm in a clinical program and we have been told by our TD that counseling sites are not very receptive to our applications unless we have counseling center experience, which our program does not offer. I'm assuming you have some experience and/or that you may be in a counseling psych program?

For counseling center sites, its very important to have at least one year of counseling center experience. They also value multicultural training and experiences with diverse clients so make sure you can provide examples of cases where a multicultural approach was useful and what your view is on multicultural psychotherapy. Good luck!

I know it's early to be thinking about internship, but my school just had own first internship meeting a week or so ago and it got me thinking about all the things I need to start working on. I figured it wouldn't hurt to post and see where people are with the process and see what advice people who went through it last year had. 🙄

July is not too early to start. I think it is a reasonable time to start because then you can pace yourself. Most people i know started looking at sites and gathering material around july and they were still busy getting everything done for November 1st.

You mean you are applying for 2011-2012 (this fall) not 2012-2013?

It looks confusing to write 2012-2013, but that's how all the internship sites and application materials describe it - it's because the internship positions are for next year, starting in 2012.

July definitely isn't too early to start looking into sites, finding those you might be interested in, and then beginning the whole whittling down process. I actually think one of my cohort-mates who applied with me in last year's cycle began drafting her personal statements sometime in July.

As for counseling centers, just wanted to reiterate the advice others have posted--I didn't apply to any myself, but based on what I've heard from peers who did, having clinical experience in a counseling center setting seems to be pretty much mandatory.
